Barry Ricci: Superintendent
From Your Superintendent...
January 2012
Dear Friends...
Congratulations to Chariho Middle School faculty and students! As compared to the first quarter of 2010-2011, 44% fewer failing grades were issued at the end of the first quarter of the current school year. The reason is simple! If work is important enough to be assigned, students need to complete it. Our new Secondary Grading Policy can be found at http://www.chariho.k12.ri.us/sites/default/files/secondary_grading_polic....
It’s important that parents make note of the following information regarding immunizations. For those students who will enter kindergarten and grade seven next year and for whom there are not extenuating circumstances (which must be discussed in advance with the school nurse teacher), all students must be fully immunized by the first day of school in August.
On Saturday, January 7, I will present the fiscal year 2013 budget to the Chariho Regional School District Committee. The budget development process starts in early October at the building and department levels and continues with building and district level reviews. On Saturday, the School Committee will receive the Superintendent’s recommended budget. After a series of public budget workshops, the School Committee is scheduled to approve a budget on February 14. This will be followed by the Annual Regional School District Meeting, which is a public hearing on the budget, on March 6. Following adoption of a fiscal year 2013 budget by the School Committee on March 13, the process culminates with an all-day referendum on April 10. The School Committee welcomes full public participation in the budget process. Budget documents and workshop dates will be posted on the District website at http://www.chariho.k12.ri.us/budget.
Please mark your calendar for March 20-22. We’re taking the Open Forum with the Superintendent on the road. On March 20, I’ll be at the Hopkinton Town Hall; on March 21, I’ll be at the Richmond Town Hall; and on March 22, I’ll be at the Charlestown Town Hall. These Forums provide the community with an opportunity to engage in informal conversation with me. All Forums will begin at 6:30 PM.
While it’s been warm thus far this winter, snow and ice are sure to come our way. Information regarding school closings, delays, and early dismissals will be provided via Twitter, local radio and television stations, OneCall Now, the district website, and the district phone system. You can sign up for email and text message notifications at the websites of radio and television stations affiliated with the RI Broadcasters Association.
Happy New Year! Take care.
