Advertising Design and Digital Printing

This program offers students the opportunity for creative development and skills enhancement in the ever-growing, fast-paced career field of visual communication. Students learn safety, the foundations of the graphic arts industry, print production, publishing and digital printing. They learn conceptual and visual problem solving using industry accepted standards, methods and equipment. Students explore visual communication as it applies to commercial art careers while creating posters, magazine and book designs, illustrations, and branding identity packages. Class work includes troubleshooting and solving production, design and prepress problems. Students create documents and design images in publishing and design software, and digital photography including image manipulation and correction.

Students learn to understand the artistic qualities of the photographic medium while acquiring the techniques for utilizing photography for expressive purposes. Instruction includes studio and field techniques, photojournalism, fashion photography, and commercial, portrait, scientific, nature, wildlife and sports photography. In producing their own works and by studying the photographs of others, students will develop a base for making informed aesthetic judgments.

Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards which include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, workplace safety, and technology and employment literacy. The program is an approved dual enrolled program through Central Maine Community College. Upon successful completion, the students will receive three transferable college credits in Digital Printing presented on a Central Maine Community College transcript.
