Visitor/Volunteer Policy

Parents and visitors are always welcome at Richmond School. For the safety and security of the children, to avoid disruptions in the classroom, and to maintain maximum educational benefits for the children, we ask that you follow these procedures:

  • If you drive your child to school, please escort him/her to the west entrance (circular-drive) and leave him/her in the care of the staff members present.
  • If at any time it is necessary for you to visit your child's classroom, please enter the building through the main door and sign in at the office. If you are visiting while school is in session, the classroom teacher will be called by the office staff.
  • Anyone wishing to volunteer in the classroom or chaperone a field trip is required to have a background check completed and the results forwarded to the superintendent's office. Forms are available in the school office. No one will be permitted to volunteer or chaperone without first completing this process.

Curriculum and Instruction

Curriculum guides for all subjects, and all grade levels are available in our library. Parents or guardians should contact their building principal to request their child's exclusion from a specific program or area of the curriculum. Alternative, meaningful assignments will be provided to the student.

Emergency Drills

Emergency drills are required by the State of Rhode Island and are held multiple times per year. The procedures for all drills are explained to the students at the start of the school year. Students are expected to file out of the building in a silent, orderly fashion.

School Photos

Individual and class photos are taken early in the fall. Notices and order forms are sent home with the students several weeks before the scheduled date. Dates for photos and retakes are listed on the district calendar.

Lunch Program

Richmond School serves both breakfast and lunch daily in our cafeteria. Your child may bring money in for lunch an/or breakfast on a daily basis or you may pay in advance by the week or month. It is helpful if your child's money is in an envelope with his/her name and homeroom on it. Students are not allowed to charge lunch or breakfast.

Applications for free/reduced-price lunch, breakfast, and milk are sent home at the beginning of the school year; however, you may request forms from the school office and apply at anytime during the school year.

Absences

Whenever a child is absent from school for any reason, we request that the parent telephone the school. It is especially important if the child has a contagious illness, e.g. chicken pox, strep throat, head lice, etc.

Arrival/Dismissal

If you transport your child to school, please be considerate of your child's teacher and fellow students. Ensure that you arrive at the school no earlier than 8:30 a.m. and no later than 8:40 a.m. so that the classroom will not be disrupted once the daily lessons have begun. Any students arriving after 8:40 a.m. will be considered tardy and must be escorted to the main office and signed in by a parent/guardian. Students must obtain a late pass fro the office staff so the teacher will know that they have checked in.

Any time a student is to be picked up early or at regular dismissal time, the following procedures will be followed:

  1. A note, sent to school with the child, must include the child's name, the date, and time of dismissal. If someone other than the parent/guardian is picking up the child, that individual's name must be on the note and must also be listed on the child's consent-to-release form. The school cannot accept any dismissal by telephone unless it is an emergency.
  2. Early dismissal of a student during the school day is handled in the school office up until 3:00 p.m. At 3:20 p.m. an announcement is made to send all students being picked up to the library. Staff members will be available to monitor dismissal and will unlock the door at the circular driveway at 3:20 p.m., allowing parents to enter and to sign out their child(ren). Parents/guardians are asked to please have identification available in the event the staff member does not recognize them.
  3. Students not being picked up will be escorted to their buses by classroom teachers. Bus monitors and teacher assistants will be supervising as well.

Drop Off Procedures

1. Cars will slowly enter the West Entrance loop.
2. Cars will form a line. The first of five cars will pull up to the end of the curb in front of the West Entrance doorway along the sidewalk.
3. Once all five cars unload, cars will depart to allow five new cars to unload.
4. Parents may assist students in carseats, but are encouraged to do so quickly.
5. For everyone’s safety, no car will pass any car in the process of unloading.
6. Parking along the interior circle of the West Entrance loop is prohibited.
7. Parents who wish walk their children to the West Entrance must park in an available spot or use additional parking on Rt. 138. To avoid parents and children crossing through traffic, a new marked pedestrian lane has been established.

Before-School Childcare

Childcare is available every morning in the gym from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for $3.00/per day per child.

Parent-Teacher Organization

PTO meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. The organization hosts a variety of fund-raisers to provide cultural programs for the children. Dates and times for PTO-sponsored activities can be found on the district calendar.

Birthday Card Policy

Keeping Kindness in Mind
In an effort to show both kindness and empathy, we ask that students refrain from distributing birthday party invitations in school unless all children from the classroom have been invited. Thank you for your understanding.
